The Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Health, Gender and Social Protection has urged organizers of the just ended Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) to take SRHR issues from just a conversation to workable actions.
Senator Dabah M. Varpilah of Grand Gape Mount County Senator, said SRHR are not just public health issues, but human rights, development and justice issues that require deliberate actions.
Addressing hundreds of of participants at the close of the three days SRHR conference in Congo Town, Senator Varpilah said conversation around SRHR must move beyond health to embrace human rights, justice and national development.
The Grand cape mount County senator however highlighted significant progress that Liberia has made in improving SRHR issues including the Domestic Violence Act of 2019, the establishment of women and children protection Units within the Liberia National Police, and President Joseph N. Boakai Sr recent public declaration to ban Female Genital Mutilation (FGM ), a landmark step in safeguarding the rights of women and girls in the Country.
As the conference concludes, participants are to adopt a declaration outlining concrete steps to advancing SRHR, promoting youth participation and strengthening accountability in Liberia.
