A fearless campaigner for the abolition of female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in Liberia has commended President Joseph Boakai for the submission of a Bill calling for the banning of the harmful traditional practice in the Country.

Rev. Joshua T. Flama, Program coordinator of Women Initiative for Self Help (WISH) operating in Grand Bassa County said although belated, the President’s courage in  submitting the bill is a significant step forward in the fight against harmful traditional practices in Liberia.

In an interview our reporters in Buchanan, Grand Bassa County, Rev. Flama said when passed the bill will serve as a tool for advocates, law enforcement agencies to victims while at the same time enhancing community efforts.

Rev. Flama wants Legislature to consider the passage of the bill as a meaning of joining their colleagues in the sub-region to protect the human rights of women and girls.

It can be record that during the 2025 Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights National Conference held in Monrovia, Rev. Flama called on the Liberian Government to pass a bill to ban the practice of female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in the Country.

The proposed law seeks to protect women and girls who remain vulnerable to practices that have long undermining effort to their well-being.
