Liberian President Joseph N. Boakai Sr. has by proclamation, declared Monday, December 1, 2025, as World AIDS Day.
The day according to the Presidential proclamation, is to be observed throughout the Country as a working holiday.
The proclamation issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on behalf of President, said the day is set aside to acknowledge the immense contributions of the United Nations and global partners in the fight against HIV and AIDS.
The President called on all citizens, government ministries and agencies, non-governmental organizations, faith-based and traditional institutions, youth groups, civil society organizations, and development partners to join the National AIDS Commission (NAC) in organizing and executing activities befitting the observance.
This year’s commemoration is being held under the global Theme: “Overcoming Disruption, Transforming the AIDS Response,” and the national Theme: “Mobilizing Domestic Support, Transforming the AIDS Response.”
President Boakai is expected to serve as the Keynote Speaker at the official program, which will take place on the grounds of the Capitol Building.
World AIDS Day 2025 comes at a crucial moment as Liberia accelerates efforts toward achieving target, which aims to end AIDS as public health threat.
Liberia and the rest of the world are striving to achieve this goal, by working to implement the global 95-95-95 targets. These goals aim to ensure that:
-95% of people living with HIV know their status through testing,
-95% of those diagnosed to be on sustained antiretroviral treatment, and
-95% of those on treatment achieve viral suppression.
These targets remain central to Liberia’s HIV response strategy and its commitment to be part of achieving countries in ending AIDS by 2030.
The observance follows the release of new data from the National AIDS Commission, which revealed that an estimated 36,000 people are currently living with HIV in Liberia, representing a national prevalence of 0.9%, according to the UNAIDS Spectrum 2025 estimate.
The estimates underscore the need for renewed investment, improved treatment coverage, and stronger community engagement as the country works toward the 95-95-95 benchmarks.
World AIDS Day 2025 serves as a powerful platform to rally national support, promote awareness, and renew commitment to a future free of AIDS.
