The National AIDS Commission (NAC) over the weekend hosted its 2026 Annual Fundraising Gala, reaffirming Liberia’s commitment to building a sustainable, nationally owned response to HIV and AIDS.

Held under the theme: “National Ownership and Sustainability,” the high-level event brought together senior government officials, diplomats, development partners, civil society organizations, private sector representatives, persons living with HIV, and students and other adolescents. The event featured a captivating live performance of The Lion King, symbolizing hope, resilience, leadership, and the continuity of life.

Madam Tracy N. Pency-Kyne, Commissioner for Partnership who delivered the welcome remarks, described the Gala as a demonstration of bringing issues regarding HIV to the public for holistic action.

“Tonight is more than a fundraising event; it is a national call to action. Liberia stands at a defining moment as traditional international financing for health programs becomes increasingly constrained,” Commissioner Pency-Kyne said.

She said though the country is making significant progress in expanding access to lifesaving HIV treatment and reducing new HIV infections, sustaining these achievements will require stronger domestic investment, broader partnerships, and shared national responsibility.

The Partnership Commissioner thanked partners in the national HIV response, development partners, donors, civil society organizations, and the private sector for their unwavering support over the years. She called for local investment in Liberia’s HIV response.

Dr. Cecelia J. Nuta, Chairperson of the National AIDS Commission, emphasized that long-term sustainability of strides made in combating HIV and AIDS depends on increased domestic ownership and financing.

“Donor support remains vital, yet it cannot be the only foundation for the national HIV response. Every sector has a role to play,” Dr. Nuta told the gathering.

Dr. Nuta described the annual fundraising Gala as a platform through which Liberians can directly contribute to ensure protection for all.

Reflecting on the Commission’s 2025 fundraising Dinner, Dr. Nuta disclosed that the event raised US$86,250, demonstrating growing national confidence in domestic resource mobilization.

She commended the strong political commitment of President Joseph N. Boakai Sr., who also Chair of the Commission’s Board of Advisors, noting that his leadership has inspired increased both public and private sectors involvements in supporting national efforts to finance Liberia’s HIV response.

The AIDS Chairperson believes that the 2026 Annual Fundraising Gala presents an important milestone in Liberia’s journey toward ending AIDS, and by promoting domestic ownership.

She reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to working alongside government and all stakeholders to build a resilient HIV response to sustain the gains beyond 2030.

Organizers of the 2026 Fundraising Gala said contribution will help to increase HIV awareness, in an effort to prevent new HIV infections, expand access to treatment and care.
